MESSAGE FROM THE CANDIDATES

John Guthrie

My name is John Guthrie, and I’m running to be your next President of USG because I want to serve you. I was previously a student at the Avery Point campus, where I was the president of the ECO Husky Club and the President and founder of the Surf Club. Here at Storrs, I’m proud to represent Hilltop Apartments as a USG senator. I believe our current student government is not a voice for every student, but with some proper refinement, it can be. Rising tuition costs threaten every student, a lack of transparency within our government limits whose voice is heard, and while we are ranked among the top sustainable campuses, we still rely heavily on natural gas. My running mate and I will advocate for increased state funding by lobbying the state legislatures. We will create email communication between USG and the student body so every student is informed. We will continue the trend to make bold efforts toward renewable energy initiatives. We won’t stop there. We will push for policies that meet students’ needs and ensure every Husky has a voice. To be your president is an enviable distinction, and one that I sincerely hope to attain.

Isabelle Cola

Hello! My name is Isabelle Cola and I’m running to be your next Vice President of USG. While I am new to USG, I have been involved in HuskyTHON for three years as a Captain, a Law Society Journal Editor, and a student worker for USM.
Our current student government lacks transparency, communication, and a strong voice for us as students. As Vice President, I will commit to representing our student body in not only the UConn administration, but in the state legislature, all while letting fellow students know exactly what is going on in their university. I will take issues such as rising tuition costs, lack of transportation, and using renewable energy right to UConn administration and the state legislature to let them know how our student body of 19,000 feels about these pressing issues and create working solutions.

I promise to work hand in hand with club and organization leaders, students, and faculty to make effective decisions that positively impact us all to create a better UConn. A UConn where all have a voice and are proud to be Huskies.
